EDMONTON — Alberta police say a missing Toronto teen may be in the Grande Prairie area, 450 kilometres northwest of Edmonton.
Grande Prairie RCMP Cpl. Carol McKinley said police received an unconfirmed, uncorroborated tip that Mariam Makhniashvili, 18, was seen at a local hotel around 9:40 a.m. on Wednesday.
They relayed the tip to Toronto police, who asked them to release the information to the public on Friday.
"We are asking locals to familiarize themselves with the poster (of Makhniashvili), and should they feel that they have seen this individual, to contact CrimeStoppers," McKinley said.
Makhniashvili, an introverted model student, was last seen Sept. 14 around 8:30 a.m. in the area near Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue in Toronto's west end. She was walking with her brother, 14, to their high school, Forest Hill Collegiate.
Toronto police interviewed hundreds of students at Mariam's school, searched neighbourhoods, parks and ravines near her home, but found few clues.
On Oct. 9, investigators found her backpack, and on Oct. 27 — her 18th birthday — they seized and searched 27 public access computers from libraries she was believed to have visited before she went missing.
The same day, someone matching the young woman's description was seen in Okotoks, Alta., a bedroom community 45 kilometres south of Calgary and more than 3,500 kilometres from Toronto.
Business owners said the woman in Okotoks who looked like Makhniashvili — but had blond hair, not brown — was trying to sell dream catchers and other craft items. She was alone.
